Tailor Made Nature & Mountain Travel in Spain

Named after the area of the Spanish Pyrenees where we have made our homes, Alto Aragón started in 1994 with walking, trekking and cross country skiing tours in the Spanish Pyrenees.  Over the years our passion for Spain´s amazing nature and wildlife has grown and developed and nowadays we offer a wide range of tours (birding, botany, lepidoptery, wildlife, nature photography, culture) as well as hiking and cross country skiing in the Pyrenees and Spain´s other mountain ranges .

Alto Aragón is a small collective of guides, all of us with many years experience, specialised knowledge and, most importantly, a love of showing Spain´s landscapes and nature to our clients.  Our aim is to give you a personalised and very special experience of this wonderful country.

We work with individuals, couples, families, groups of friends, clubs and agencies and provide trips tailored to your interests, abilities, budget and your timetable.  Let us know what you´d like to do and we´ll design a tour to suit you!

professional and passionate guides

Richard Cash

Originally from the UK, Richard has spent half his life in the Pyrenees.  Richard has led hiking, nature, skiing and cultural trips in Spain for more than 20 years and continues to be amazed by the wonders of his chosen home.  He´s knowledgeable, easy going and works hard to make sure each client has the best possible vacation.  Leading birding, botany, butterfly and general nature tours has fed his interest in the web of nature, the interactions between species and how they adapt to their environment.  He´s also fascinated by the history and culture of Spain, particularly the traditional life which still exists in Spain´s villages, valleys and mountains.

Richard has organised and run countless tours with Alto Aragón and has worked for, among others:  Abercrombie & Kent,  A Step Ahead, Apex Expeditions,  Birdfinders,  Greentours, Headwater Holidays, Langdale Walking Holidays, The Travelling Naturalist, Naturetrek and Take a Walk.  In the winter Richard works as a cross country skiing instructor.

Richard lives with his family in a tiny hilltop village in the Pyrenees and loves photography, reading, history, growing organic vegetables and playing banjo, mandolin and guitar.

Olatz Fernandez

Olatz is a mountain guide and expert naturalist specialising in alpine flora and mammals.  Originally from Madrid where she studied Environmental Science she has made the Pyrenees her home for the past 15 years.  She loves sharing her knowledge and passion for nature and the mountains and, as well as guiding, works in conservation as an environmental scientist here in the Pyrenees.   Among her many talents Olatz speaks English and she is a genuinely kind and considerate guide, happiest when showing visitors the Isard (Pyrenean Chamois) or a rare orchid or leading a hike through the mountains she calls home.
When not working you will still find Olatz in the mountains. As well as hiking she also enjoys ski touring and loves rock climbing.

Paco Batres – Pirri

Pirri is a mountain guide, environmental teacher and cross country ski instructor.  Like Olatz, Pirri came to the Pyrenees 15 years ago to pursue his dream of living and working in wild natural spaces.  Pirri is an excellent all round naturalist and has a degree in Plant Biology. He specialises in mycology, leading many mushrooming trips and working to promote mushroom conservation and good mycological practise .  He also loves leading hikes and treks and in winter he teaches cross country skiing.  He´s another very kind guide and makes any trip he does memorable, fun and informative.  Pirri lives with his wife and son on the french side of the border in a house perched in a beech forest above a beautiful medieval village.

Sergio Padura

Sergio is a professional photographer, originally from Barcelona, who fell in love with the Pyrenees as a boy on a scout outing.  He´s lived in the mountains for many years and is a fine all round photographer with a special interest in landscape and nature.  He´s a photography teacher too and has led many mountain photography trips and courses.  His emphasis is always on light and personal vision and he has helped many people – from complete beginners to the more experienced – become better photographers.  His trips are a lot of fun, never too serious and always instructive.  Sergio speaks excellent English.  To see some of his amazing photos see
