Our eight day holiday in the High Pyrenees explores two magnificent valleys and the Ordesa canyon. Five walks take you into the heart of mountain country of rare beauty and real variety.
The first part of the holiday is in the Hecho and Ansó valleys with their idyllic and still traditional villages. Our selected walks explore uncrowded, high mountains dotted with gem like glacial lakes and, along the high border with France, breathtaking limestone peaks and long ridges make for classic mountain walking.
The last walk is in the Ordesa canyon, justifiably famous for its towering cliffs, raging river and waterfalls, stunning views and plentiful plant, bird and wildlife. Throughout you are guaranteed excellent walking in some of Europe's finest mountain scenery.

DAY 1 Hostal
de La Val, Hecho D
Transfer from Biarritz (2½ hours) to Hecho. Hecho is a wonderful
Pyrenean village, still very traditional and full of life with
plenty of bars and shops. The villagers speak Cheso the valley
dialect and are mostly farmers and foresters.
DAY 2 Hostal
de
La Val, Hecho
B L D
A wonderful circular walk which explores a side valley beneath
Bisaurin (2669m) before climbing through alpine pasture and
along a ridge with unforgettable views.
DAY 3 Hostal
de
La Val, Hecho
B L D
A hike to an azure glacial lake set above one of the most beautiful
valleys of the Pyrenees. We are likely to see the majestic and
rare lammergeier soaring above us on these walks and the high
meadows come alive with flowers in early summer.
DAY 4 Hostal
de
La Val, Hecho
B L D
We walk up to the beautiful Ibon (lake) de Acherito set in its
cirque of jagged rocks. From the lake we head up to the
border ridge with France for some amazing views before walking
down the Acherito valley through alpine meadows studded with
orchids in summer. This valley is, for us, the loveliest
in the Pyrenees.
DAY 5 Hostal
de
La Val, Hecho
B L D
To the Ansó valley to climb Pico Petrechema (2360m) which
dominates the border with its famous Aiguilles (needles) d'Ansabere.
We return to the starting point along a hanging valley with
great views and ancient, gnarled pines growing from the cliffs.
A superb walk through classic limestone scenery.
DAY 6 Hotel
Villa de Torla B D
Rest day. We drive to Torla (1 hour) with a visit to Jaca -
the local capital with some good shops and an excellent museum
- on the way. Torla is a pretty and busy village at the gateway
to the Ordesa National Park. It has some beautiful old buildings
in a great setting.
DAY 7 Hotel
Villa de Torla B L
D
A classic walking circuit of the Ordesa Canyon following old
hunters paths 3000 ft above the valley floor to the head of
the Valley below Monte Perdido to then follow the river with
its raging waterfalls back down the valley through alpine meadows
and shady beech forest. Flowers, wild animals and rare
birds of prey are plentiful here in Europe's oldest national
park. This is an unmissable highlight of the Pyrenees.
